The COURSES
To create a positive and challenging dance experience
for every student, class place-ment is based on age, strength,
flexibility, level of technique and previous dance experience.
Minimum level expectations are available at the office.

Ballet

Ballet
IA is a children's class which introduces Classical Ballet
techniques designed to stimulate concentration, discipline and a
love for ballet. It is recommended for boys and girls, ages 6 to
7.
Ballet IB is a continuation and enhancement of Ballet IA
and is designed for continuing students or new students ages 8 to
10.
Ballet II A & B emphasize proper
placement, alignment and muscular support. Students at this level
will be required to take two ballet classes per week. Students may
enroll in Ballet II with permission by the instructor.
Ballet III & IV are designed
for students with at least three years of recent ballet training.
This class emphasizes more complex barre and center work, musicality
and proper placement. The Ballet III program may include beginning
pointe. Ballet III students are required to take at least three
ballet classes per week and Ballet IV students must take four. Students
may enroll in Ballet III and IV with permission by the instructor.
Ballet
V, VI & VII Intermediate / Advanced students are required
to take at least five ballet classes per week. These classes may
be en pointe or slipper. Students may enroll with permission by
the instructor.
Open Ballet for Beginning &
Intermediate Dancers. Ages 11-Adult. Open ballet is designed for
older students who would like to experience ballet as an art form
and activity, but do not plan to make it their dance focus. There
are two levels, based on dance experience, I and II - III.

Modern
Modern
Dance classes include work on the floor, standing center and traveling
patterns. Classes may include creative or improvisational components.
Spinal/pelvic alignment will be emphasized within the vocabulary
of the use of the back in contraction and release, in spirals, and
in falls and recoveries. Concurrent enrollment in Ballet is recommended
for all levels.
Modern I and II for ages 8

Modern II for ages 11+
Modern III - IV for ages 10
and up with permission by instructor.
Modern IV, V, VI & VII for experienced
dancers with permission by instructor.
Lyrical class will encourage dancers to incorporate
expression and emotion into their dancing. The goal is to interpret
the music and the movement while adding in individuality. Although
lyrical is typically associated with ballet or "slow"
jazz, this class is geared towards adding emotion and "performing"
to all styles of music.
Jazz
Jazz is a fast-paced class that challenges students to express
themselves physically and mentally, utilizing popular and jazz music.
The class begins with a warm-up, then floor work including isolation
techniques and learning new steps, ending with a dance combination.
Jazz Kids - Ages 9-11

Jazz Intermediate - Advanced is for
the more experienced dancer. Instructor's permission is required.
Hip
Hop & Breakdancing
Let loose and have fun! Unlike other styles of dance, no technique
is needed, just attitude! The focus is to learn a variety of movements,
put those movements together into a short "hip hop" routine,
and get a workout while doing it! If you can hear a beat and count
to eight, you can hip hop!

Breakdancing - Ages 11+
Tap stresses technique, coordination, rhythm, style, and the ability
to memorize combinations and is just plain fun!

(for our littlest dancers, ages 3-4)
This class is about movement and discovery. Children are given themes
that encourage them to discover different ways of moving. Creative
Dance promotes coordination of thought, feeling and action. This
class helps to develop musicality, sense of rhythm, and imagination.
Pre-Dance I is an introductory course
geared to the attention span of the pre-schooler. Class includes
Ballet, Tap and Creative Movement. Ages 4 to 6.
Pre-Dance II reviews all movement
learned in the first year with additional technique introduced,
making the class more challenging. The young dancers continue to
work on flexibility, leadership and to feel a sense of pride, as
they are able to move with all types of music geared for their age.
A high priority is to have fun while learning the art of dance and
building self-esteem. Ages 5-6.
 Tap/Jazz
Combo Classes
This is a perfect combination! Contemporary and Big Band music
are used to develop basic tap and jazz skills.
Tap/Jazz I & II for ages 6 to
10.
Tap/Jazz I-III for ages 8 to 11 w/exp.
Competition Dance
These classes are by audition only. Please see Island Dance office
for more information.
Workshops
Various workshops will be offered during the year (such as Salsa,
Ballroom, Hip Hop etc.). Contact Island Dance.

Gymnastics
Our mission is to challenge and teach in always changing ways to
maximize the gymnasts' potential for growth and understanding. Gymnastics
is fun, interactive and provides a class atmosphere of positive
reinforcement enabling all students to step outside comfort zones,
to overcome fears and exude confidence in class and life. Ballet
is recommended for Team and Pre-Team Gymnasts.
Tiny Tigers - Ages 18-36 months (parent
and me class)
Wild Tigers - Ages 3-4
Roaring Tigers - Ages 5-6
Intermediate - Ages 10+
Advanced - Teens

Cheerleading Tumbling and Stunts
This high energy sport focuses on tumbling, stunts, and jumps. This
will help prepare students for middle school and high school cheerleading.
Ballet / Pointe
Course Recommendations
Ballet
students are required to take an appropriate number of classes in
order to develop strength and stamina. This will allow the student
to dance safely, with less chance of injury.
Level: Number of classes per week.

Ballet IV-VI I- Four +
Prior to going en pointe, the dancer must have permission of the
instructor and approval by Charlene Brown. It is highly recommended
that dancers consult with a foot and ankle specialist, such as Dr.
Woodle, D.P.M. (206) 784-3144.
Modern is suggested for Levels I & II.
Modern, Jazz and Lyrical are strongly recommended for Levels III
and up.
Ballet students must arrive on time, dressed appropriately or may
be excused from class.
